Beattie/Coutts win GOLD in European Showdown @ Portobello Beach

Absolutely delighted with our win in the CEV SCD European zonal event at the weekend. This fantastic event on home sand was a great test for us at this point in the season, amidst a tough training block.  The victory was a small reward for all of our hard work until now; but this is only the beginning, there is lots of work still to be done...

A huge shout out to Scottish Volleyball Association for hosting a fantastic event; to some local supporters who helped make the event a huge success and to everyone who came and supported the Scottish teams across the weekend.

Next up: UKRAINE for CEV Eastern European zonal event (EEVZA)

Stay tuned for an update from Kharkiv this weekend!

Langkawi, Malaysia to Xiamen, China

Last week we returned from an epic trip to Asia, where we gained fantastic opportunities to not only gain more world ranking points but play in some high level matches on the world stage.

In both competitions we were up against it with some top opposition from Europe, but despite two defeats, we made great progress and performed at a level we have never played at before.

While in Malaysia we took a massive risk...

From Langkawi, Malaysia, we had 2 choices... We could have flown home to Edinburgh or board a flight to Xiamen, China for our first 3 star FIVB event.

Sitting top of the reserve list for China, it was a massive risk to travel, as we were relying on teams dropping out to be able to play; for another valuable opportunity to compete and earn world ranking points.

We took the risk...

On the eve of the competition we let the organisers know we were there and prepared to compete if anyone dropped out.

The risk paid off; we were in!!!

Germany (Top Seeds) were the challenge awaiting with all to play for to get into the Main Draw of the competition. Despite one of our best performances to date, we went down to a very strong Germany team. Although disappointed not to progress into the main draw, it was undoubtedly another amazing opportunity to learn and improve.

Our journey didn't stop there; we then used the rest of the week to train; on court and off, making connections, speaking to other players and coaches, playing against lots of different teams, and watching some of the best teams in the world competing, making it an extremely valuable trip and totally worth the risk.

Stay tuned for news about our next venture; for now it's back to work and time to push on to our next phase of training!

Season Opener sees Beattie/Coutts make history for Scottish Beach Volleyball

Huge result for us against Australia in our first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event here in Sydney, a win that has been a long time in the making and a reward for a lot of hard work.

We have earned the opportunity to progress in the tournament and play a very good Australian team tomorrow; this is exactly what we want from these experiences! We are learning with every point we play and will continue to do so as we progress through the season ahead!

A HUGE shout out to everyone back home; the support this morning was phenomenal, it really makes a massive difference knowing you are all behind us!

19th February 2017 - Prague, Czech Republic

This weekend saw us swap the beaches of Portobello for an impressive indoor Beach Volleyball complex in Prague.

This time we were playing in the Czech National Winter tour with a very good line up of teams to play against, including teams from Czech Republic, Slovakia and Finland.  It was a flying visit, arriving on Saturday evening and leaving in the very early hours of Monday morning.  Our campaign started with an 08.30am match against a young but talented Czech team.  After winning this match and another  2-0 against a tough Slovakian team (after being 15-20 down in the second), we had qualified from the group stages into the Quarter Finals, where we faced a very experienced Czech team.  Despite playing some of our best volleyball to date, we went down 2-0 to the eventual Finalists of the tournament.

We still had another game to play to decide 5/6th place, and this time we faced another tough team, losing narrowly in a very close encounter.

At this point in the season its not about the results, but rather the opportunity to play and put things into practice.  This is exactly what we got, the results WILL come.  We are getting better with every touch of the ball, and will take lots of positives back to Portobello to build on.

We look forward to our next update from our next event...

4th February 2017 - Copenhagen, Denmark

After 3 months of hard graft over the winter, we finally got the chance to compete...  The first of our scheduled pre-season tournaments saw us travel to Copenhagen to play in the Danish National Winter Tour.

Matches is what we were there for, and matches we got, with an unbeaten run all the way to the Tournament Final where we faced a top Danish National Team.  Unfortunately we didn't get the win but we were really happy with how the tournament went, performing well in competitive situations; a great opportunity to put all our hard work over the winter to the test...

Thanks to Copenhagen Beach Volleyball Club for having us!

Beattie / Coutts take on Europe's Elite at CEV Satellite, Czech Republic.

Last weekend, Lynne and Mel travelled to Pelhrimov in Czech Republic.  Their campaign started well, with Scotland recording a 2-0 win against Hungary in their first round game.  The team then went on to take on top German team, Tillman and Schillerwein, overall winners of a recent Satellite in Romania this year.  This was always going to be a tough game, but Beattie/Coutts performed credibly, causing the Germans some difficulty with some efficient net play at times.  Over the course of the match the Germans proved more consistent, eventually taking the match 2-0 (21-17, 21-15), but lots of positives for the Scottish Pairing to take from the match moving forward.
